Sri Lanka Dance Festival™
Official Code of Conduct
Valid for all attendees, artists, volunteers and crew.
Sri Lanka Dance Festival is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, respectful and joyful experience for everyone, regardless of gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexuality, dance background or experience level.
Participation in any part of the festival requires full acceptance and adherence to this Code of Conduct. Violations will lead to consequences, including removal from the festival without refund and potential blacklisting from future events.
RESPECT IS NON-NEGOTIABLE
- Treat every person with dignity, kindness and empathy.
- Disrespectful behavior - verbal, physical, emotional, or digital will not be tolerated.
- This includes bullying, mocking, gossip, rudeness, or exclusionary behavior whether it’s aimed at dancers, instructors, staff, or volunteers.
CONSENT ON AND OFF THE DANCE FLOOR
- Always ask before dancing. Accept “no” with grace.
- “Yes” is not permanent, consent can be withdrawn at any time, and must be respected.
- Consent extends to social situations, physical contact and personal space outside the dance floor as well.
ANTI-HARASSMENT & SAFE SPACE POLICY
We have zero tolerance for:
- Sexual harassment (verbal, physical, or digital)
- Unwelcome or suggestive advances
- Gender-based discrimination or derogatory remarks
- Racism, xenophobia, body shaming, or ageism
- Offensive jokes, inappropriate innuendo, or suggestive comments
- Any act that makes someone feel unsafe, humiliated, or unwelcome
All complaints will be taken seriously and acted on swiftly and confidentially.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION
- This is an international festival celebrating differences. Be culturally aware, sensitive and open-minded.
- Respect language barriers and communication differences.
- Treat all genders, races, body types and dance levels equally and without judgment.
- Avoid assuming pronouns. Use gender-neutral greetings when unsure.
PROFESSIONALISM & RESPONSIBILITY
For artists, DJs, instructors, volunteers and team members:
- Represent your art and your community with integrity.
- Show up on time, prepared and committed to your assigned role.
- Do not misuse your position of influence.
- Engage respectfully with participants at all times.
- No alcohol or drug use before or during official workshops or performances.
DANCE FLOOR ETIQUETTE
- Keep your hygiene and attire clean and appropriate.
- Apologize if you accidentally bump into or step on someone.
- Be aware of your space and avoid forceful or reckless movement.
- Allow all dancers to feel safe, respected and celebrated, regardless of level.
- Do not teach on the social floor unless asked.
- If someone declines your invitation to dance, respect it without question.
PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEOGRAPHY & SOCIAL MEDIA
- Do not film people without their permission, especially during socials.
- Respect the privacy of those who do not wish to be photographed or tagged online.
- Official media team will capture content for festival promotions. By attending, you grant permission to be recorded and featured.
- Use discretion and celebrate others kindly and respectfully when posting online.
ALCOHOL, SUBSTANCE USE & BEHAVIOR
- Moderate, respectful celebration is welcome.
- Reckless drunkenness, aggressive behavior, or disruption of events is grounds for removal.
- Possession or use of illegal substances is strictly forbidden under Sri Lankan law.
RESPECT FOR VENUE & HOST COUNTRY
- Treat the Mount Lavinia Hotel and all post-tour destinations with care and responsibility.
- Follow local customs and legal guidelines, especially in public.
- Dress codes are encouraged but must remain respectful in religious spaces.
- Be mindful of Sri Lanka’s rich culture, spiritual sensitivity and hospitality traditions.
REPORTING VIOLATIONS
If you experience or witness a violation of this Code of Conduct:
- Contact a Festival Safety Lead, volunteer, or organizer immediately
- All complaints are confidential and taken seriously
- Support will be provided to ensure your safety and comfort

CONSEQUENCES
Violation of this Code of Conduct may result in:
- Removal from a specific event or activity
- Expulsion from the festival without refund
- Reporting to authorities (in serious cases)
- Ban from future editions of Paraíso SBK and partner events
